John Cale – The Academy in Peril (1972, Reprise) (Design: Andy Warhol)
Warhol’s inclusion in shows about album cover art is both expected and very over at this point. Alas, an additional Warhol concept and design is included so as to highlight the more commercial enterprise of the later Factory years. This striking cover utilizes a die-cut pattern to suggest actual slides of images displayed on the inner sleeve. It is reported that the slides were arranged randomly on a sheet, for effect. Also of note, Warhol supposedly traded his services to Cale in exchange for him composing the sound track to Andy Warhol’s Heat.
